My daughter was assigned the task of writing about herself. She doesn’t like free writing to begin with, but she’s struggling with it because she doesn’t know what to write. She doesn’t really have any hobbies or strong interests. She doesn’t recognize her talents or dreams yet. So how do you introduce yourself when you’re not sure who you are?
That is one thing Paul had no problem doing. He knew exactly who he was and what his purpose was. As I began reading in the book of Romans 1:1-7 I heard the longest introduction I’ve read (so far) in the bible. This was a man who came before the Romans and told them exactly who he is, why he was there and what he was about. Not to mention he even told them who they are! Or perhaps, who they should be.
It was almost as if he felt the people needed a reminder. “You remember Jesus, right? That man who declared he was the son of God, rose from the dead, gave us the gift of grace and life and called us all to be disciples? Yeah…that’s the guy who sent me here to talk to you!” As if Jesus was no longer front page news now that he had been gone for a bit, and all of the hubbub had died down some, so they needed a reminder or encouragement to go forth and still do what they have been called to do with their faith in Christ.
It’s kind of like how I feel at times. When the daily grind forces me to take a long look in the mirror and ask myself…”Do I know you??” When I feel like all of my dreams and goals are lost in the mom hair, frustration lines from dealing with bickering kids all day and the desire to get out and explore again but it’s just not feasible all the time with 5 littles. If it doesn’t include a playground, they don’t want anything to do with it! I have to remind myself that it’s only a season in my life. That the person I truly am is still there, she just has different priorities at this time. I’ve started to find beauty in the mom hair, the finger prints on my pants, and the fact that I get to stay with our kids all day.
Finding my identity in Christ is what opens my eyes. I am loved, I am called and I am blessed beyond measure! He is ever present and NEVER weak, nor will He ever forsake us in our seasons or valleys! I believe that is why Paul introduced himself in such a way. To declare that he is sure of his identity and of the one he serves.
“Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead: By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name: Among whom ye also the called of Jesus Christ: To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called by the saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father; and the Lord Jesus Christ.”
In other news…..I am SO excited to see my husbands face when he comes home next week! Because another part of this season of mine includes two girls who are in school, rather than DESTROYING their bedroom! Their room has not stayed this clean since EVER and I can already hear his sigh of relief! (They have a floor sweetie!)Tags: certainty, faith, paul, Romans, Study
