I used to sit and seriously wonder if God put me on this earth to be one those misfortunates that others learn lessons from. You know…what NOT to be.
I could sit here and go through the list of all the things I did wrong and of all the people I wronged in the process…the list is a mile long, at least. However, I’m going to tell you how I came back from it and how I am still growing.
It’s as simple as that. The moment I turned my control over to God, I began to notice marvelous changes in my life. It wasn’t just a “ok. Everyone tells me God is in control so I guess I’ll go along with this idea.” No, it was a KNOWLEDGE that I did not and could not control my life. My life was not mine, it was and is His.
For a while I grew confident in who I was and I felt peace in myself and with others. I had a burning desire to “get my life back on track.” God was awesome and He was doing great things in my life! It didn’t always feel great, but I knew it was for my betterment and so I welcomed it.
Then I got complacent and I stopped turning to God and I started to take the controls again. My old habits and thought patterns started to sneak back in and I was back where I started. I was quickly approaching rock bottom again. Then it happened…the momentum stopped just before I hit. It sure felt like I hit because the pain of being suspended just above the crash was more unbearable than anything I had ever experienced before.
That’s when I heard God speaking and I knew what I needed to do. I needed to get back Him, and not only that, I needed ALL of him in my life. I needed Jesus and I needed the Holy Spirit. Without all of Him I was flying on just one engine. I was sitting on a one legged stool and that gets tiring after a while.
Since then He has slowly loosened the grip on my line until I could calmly and proudly stand on the rock that was beneath me. I was standing on firm ground, my God and all that He is.
There are many people who look at their life and are upset with the way that it has turned out. They look at their family and the roller coaster that they have been put through. They look at their job situation and wonder how they will ever have a better life. They look at their health issues and wonder “why me?”
God allows these things to happen to you and to come into your life because He is trying to get your attention! He is waiting for you to turn to Him. Sometimes you’ll see the bottom coming and will shout out to Him and he’ll catch you before you hit. Sometimes He’ll flat out trip you up and force you to hit rock bottom. However, He wants you to realize that that rock underneath you…it’s Him. You can either see that and grow on Him, or you can wander off in search of some more plush ground that makes you feel more comfortable for the time being. I’ll warn you though, if you choose the latter, He’ll trip you up again at some point.
Everyone wants to think that the hand that they have been dealt is so much worse than everyone else’s. “Look at all that I put up with! No one would have put up with this!” “I have not once complained, and this is the thanks I get!” “It is just one thing after another. How much more am I expected to deal with?” Your life, your situation, your struggles aren’t any greater or any more valid than the next person’s. God allowed the things into your specific life because you needed it and He needed you to go through them.
He wants you to use the things you have learned to help others and to glorify Him. To find gratitude in all that He has blessed you with and to see His beauty and magnificence in your life rather than the ugly and bitterness of evil. He wants you to follow His commands and to see the good that He sees in you. He knows who you are and He knows your worth and what you are capable of….trust Him and seek Him in all that you do. Don’t live for yourself, it’s extremely lonely living for your own comfort and needs. Live for God and you’ll break free from the strongest cage imaginable.
