The thief cometh not, but that he may steal, and kill, and destroy: I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly. John 10:10
We all have times in our life when things just aren’t going as sweetly as we wish they could be. Whether it’s just having a rough morning getting the kids to cooperate or life changing seasons that make it almost unbearable to even get out of bed or you start your morning dreading what may lie ahead in the coming hours. Either way, those times make it really hard to see and seek the joy that was meant for your life.
You have your own circumstances, I have mine. You have the life that you have been given, the same as I do. I happen to be a wife, a mother, a friend, a daughter, a sister. I do the majority of the parenting and house work. I do the doctor’s apts, the meals, the bussing of my kids and myself to school, church, play dates, activities. I do a lot and some days it gets really overwhelming doing it all on my own. It’s not because we have 5 children (though when arguments and tantrums come on it can be very overwhelming with so many to listen to). It’s not because there’s so little time to do everything that needs to be done. I have the same amount of time as everyone else…24 hours.
The reason life gets overwhelming and zaps the joy right out of me is because I am misplacing where my joy should be coming from. My joy, your joy, isn’t meant to be supplied by friends, a spouse, a job, or possessions….though they can certainly contribute to it! Your joy is meant to be sourced by the one person and one thing that has complete control of it. Yourself.
Circumstances and people can definitely zap the joy and love from you, ONLY if you permit them to. Remember, you’re the only one who can provide yourself with joy. If you find yourself blaming your spouse, if you find yourself shifting the responsibility onto your friends or your job, if you start accusing your family or the life you have…you’ve been expecting something from them that they can not supply. They can only add to what you already have.
How can you experience joy and love when you don’t feel it? Remember what Jesus did for you! He conquered death!! Not just the death that takes place when your body finally gives out and there are no longer brain waves detected. The death of the soul and the spirit in this life and in the next!
He came so that we could experience LIFE more abundantly. That means right here, right now as well as the after life. You find joy in the fact that there is NOTHING you need fear or worry about or be frustrated about or even mull over when you truly begin to believe that Christ came and died for us so that we may live abundantly. My insecurities and fear of being vulnerable…no need for them! He created me as I am for a reason and I will no longer hold it back for fear of being hurt or rejected! In that I find joy.
I will no longer wish for my circumstances to change but rather that my heart would change. That I will be content with the life that I have now and know that since God is always fighting for me I have no need to fear my feature. God is love and if God is fighting for me then I’m good to go! The devil may place temptations and obstacles in my path but I will remember to simply armor myself with truth, be who I am and have faith that I will come out the other side with God’s love before me. I will most certainly fight my fleshly desires when I grow tired, but I will remember again to be content in what I have and run from the temptations, lest I fall.
It was said that only those who truly received and know the grace and mercy of God have the initiative to fight for what is right. Notice I said fight. Not just do, because we are all taught (hopefully) the difference between right and wrong. However, when the heat is really on and when others want to give in to what the world says is ok (abortion, infidelity, lust, greed, idolatry, etc.), the true fighters will be those that want to do what is proclaimed as right by God. No one is perfect and will certainly fail to do what is right at times, but the important part is to realize when you did wrong and sinned against God and fight all the harder to not fall prey again. The number one right thing is, Love God with all of your being.
When I love my God with my whole heart I also love who He is in me. When I love who I am because of Him, I can find joy in my life…no matter what…because He is giving me right now what I need to keep growing and blooming into my more abundant life. He is the God who wanted me to exist. He is the God who died for me and took on all of my wrong doing. He is the God who came back to life so that I may join him in a glorious afterlife! What’s to say, though, that this life can’t also be wonderful after all that He has done and continues to do for me?
