Faith can move mountains! I hear it over and over. All I need is faith the size of a mustard seed and mountains will be moved, trees will uproot, God will give you the ability to do great things! Faith can move mountains.
What about them mountains that don’t get moved?
Am I not praying enough? Am I not praying for the right things? Is my faith meter not in the green or has it dipped into the yellow? Is God on a bathroom break?
Jesus asked his disciples who started to doubt, “Do you not believe in me?” Of course their answer was an emphatic “Of course we do!” I can stand here and say, “Yes! I believe that Jesus was and is who he said he is!”
Why, then, do we start to question things when our mountains, our trials/temptations/tests pop up? Do I BELIEVE in Jesus, in God, and ALL that he is?
Trials and tests arise in our life for a reason. Some are large, some are small. Some last only a couple hours, others last a couple decades. Either way though, they are placed in our life so that we will either grow and flourish or we will hand in our 2 weeks notice. We’ll learn to lean on who God really is and through our suffering we will gain endurance and patience. We will grow and be blessed further. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
OR, we will give in to temptation. We will give up and stop relying on God to give us strength to endure our trials and testing. We will doubt and even forsake God….which is NOT a good day for that person…it’s heartbreaking.
But again, what about those mountains that still remain unmoved? You feel closer to God than ever before, but that ridiculously high and rocky mountain hasn’t let a single stone loose.
This is when I started thinking… I like the mountains.
Growing up in high school and college I craved the chances to get away and drive up in the Blue Ridge Mountains near our home. We lived right at the foot of the Skyline Drive in Virginia and so it was an easy 15 minute drive from our house to being completely free and lost in the mountains. It was my safe place. My escape and breath of fresh air. Not only being on top of the mountain but also perching on a rock cliff and admiring the neighboring peaks.
My husband flew us across country for a family vacation and my favorite view out the window was when we were flying over the mountains. I love the view of snowcapped mountains or seeing the sun set over them. Fog that settles in the valleys and being so high that the clouds are below you. Mountains can be beautiful!
I know what you’re thinking. “I’m not dealing with that kind of mountain! My mountain is an eye sore. It’s causing me pain. It has cast such a huge shadow that I can’t see the sun anymore!”
The beauty in those kind of mountains come from the POSSIBILITY of what could take place in the waiting. The possibility of how greatly God could be glorified if/when he chooses to move it.
So try to put a positive spin on your situation. Stop seeing your tests and trials as something that you must endure. But rather, marvel at all that could possibly happen as we trust, grow and change because we serve a Mighty God who is capable of what is literally impossible to anyone/anything else!
